TDA Bringing Medical Supplies to Haiti during
Cholera Outbreak
updated October 22nd, 2010

From Dr. Ayoade Olatunbosun-Alakija in Port-au-Prince Oct 22nd, 2010 8:30pm
We thought we were bringing shoes and school supplies for the beginning of the new school year but arrived into Haiti on the very day the much dreaded cholera epidemic hit this already ravaged nation. The beautiful people of Haiti are so resilient and full of life and joy yet this is an added burden that this nation could do without right now. Today has been spent in meetings with a coalition of NGOs forming a cholera response team, I worked on a public health message which went out on radio broadcast nationwide then tonight our entire team worked and loaded up a truck with all the intravenous fluids and antibiotics we could find and tomorrow at 5 am some of our team members head north to St Nicholas hospital at the epi-centre on the outbreak to provide desperately needed assistance, It is no coincidence that we have 2 medically qualified personnel on our team and others with hearts to serve.

Haiti needs us ALL right now. This Nation cannot cope with another disaster. Please pray for Haiti and pray that the cholera outbreak will be contained.

With both teams on the ground, the TDA team went straight to work today, treating 60 patients in the first hour and kept hard at work for the next seven hours. Their main activities included distributing medicine, bedside love and care and sharing compassion wherever it was needed.
Among those treated was a woman with multiple fractures and a baby who also had received a blow to the head, fracturing her skull. Both patients were safely taken by the team to the medi-share hospital, run by the University of Miami, to receive further medical attention. Other conditions such as internal bleeding, water related stomach illnesses, headaches and stress-related issues were also treated.

Although the demands are vast, the team is doing a great job meeting the needs of each person. Due to the large amount of people desperate for treatment, an ex-military team member had to set up a perimeter around the treatment base to avoid mobbing. Other challenges that face those in Haiti are shortage of clean water and fuel for transportation.

World Harvest Mission, out of Lake Shore, Florida is doing an amazing job running the New Life Children's Home in Post Cazeau which is where the TDA team are staying. The day ended under the mango tree as the team ate dinner, which consisted of various food items brought over in their back-packs, and spent time getting to know each other more.

TDA team Phase 2 flew out of Florida this morning and should be landing in PAP shortly.
Report from Haiti response Team Leader, Rikki Alakija - Team on the ground were transported by open truck this morning and are currently in a 'tent city' - Broken House - at a makeshift medical clinic that saw over hundreds of patients just yesterday. They are all safe and well and have adapted to their camp site on an open football field (soccer). They have had no cooking facilities but are living on muesli bars and beef jerky. The need is overwhelming and the scenes of devastation unimaginable. The people of Haiti are so grateful for any help and their resilience is amazing in the face of such tragedy. We have already heard and witnessed scenes of hope and stories of reconciliation. Our commitment at TDA is for the long haul. We are privileged to be able to respond in their time of need.

They landed safely this morning - some were immediately dispatched from the airfield to one of the newly created 'tent cities' within the ruins of PAP to perform urgent medical and surgical procedures and distribute medicines. Within the last hour the rest of the team have arrived at the orphanage and are setting up camp and beginning to tend to the needy. A eminent neurosurgeon departed LAX this morning to also join the team bringing further supplies.

TDA is now poised to deliver immediate humanitarian aid and relief to the people of Haiti. A team of approximately 50 people led by TDA founder, Rikki Alakija are preparing to leave within a matter of days pending the airport in Haiti opening and government security clearance. The team includes medically trained individuals, social workers, crisis counselors, grief counselors and media that will be bringing assistance in various capacities.
TDA is in collaboration with several organizations that have donated medical supplies, medical equipment, food, water, clothing and other necessities. This initial trip will be Phase 1 of TDA's commitment to Haiti, which will focus on immediate relief as well as an overall assessment of needs in the communities we will be assisting.
Phase 2 and 3 will be focused on rebuilding, reconstructing and ensuring sustainability. Several more teams will be mobilized over the next year. TDA is determined to partner with the people of Haiti and others to provide the support and assistance needed to rebuild their earthquake-devastated nation.
